Seventh-generation circus performer and producer, Merrik Ashton, was born into the world-renowned Ashton family. Growing up surrounded by the unique lifestyle of circus performers, Merrik has known nothing but the thrill of performance and travel. The performing arts are literally in his blood.
LASSÙ marks Merrik’s highly anticipated debut as a producer, and it promises to be the hottest ticket at Fringe World 2025.
Merrik shares, “I can’t imagine launching LASSÙ anywhere other than Perth. Though I was born in Sydney, Perth is my adopted home. This show will bring a level of production never seen before at Fringe World.
“At just 11 years old, I was performing with my family’s show, Circus Joseph Ashton, when we first came to Perth. We spent 12 years touring WA and we owe so much to the incredible support we received from the people of WA, who brought their families to our shows year after year.
Coming from a long line of producers, it may seem surprising that the thought of producing snuck up on me. I live and breathe performing and am a huge fan of all forms of live performance, from musicals and plays to circus arts. Over the years, I’ve accumulated the necessary skills and found my own voice as a creator. LASSÙ feels like the perfect opportunity to make a bold impact on the live performance landscape.
LASSÙ is a perfect blend of modern and traditional circus, dance, and burlesque—it’s a saucy, adult circus, definitely not one for the kids. The intimate venue is purpose-built for the ultimate audience experience, where they’ll be able to see every bead of sweat and every muscle fibre under strain as world-class artists deliver breathtaking performances. It’s an honour and privilege to debut this extraordinary show for WA audiences.”
LASSÙ’s Creative Director is the Helpmann Award-winning choreographer Mitchell Woodcock, one of Australia’s most sought-after creative minds, known for his extensive work across entertainment. Mitchell’s previous credits include choreographing the Paper Dolls series for Paramount+, as well as serving as the creative director for The Voice, Australian Idol, and major events like the ICC T20 World Cup Opening Ceremony and the FIFA World Cup Closing Ceremony. Mitchell has also created performances for over 50 national and international artists, including Kylie Minogue, Rita Ora, and Meghan Trainor.
LASSÙ will be performed in a bespoke big top/spiegeltent, just ten minutes from where Merrik grew up playing cricket in South Perth, at Taylor Reserve, a new location for Fringe World.
