Dan Rath has been steadily making a name for himself over the past few years. He’s popped up on Guy Montgomery’s Guy Mont Spelling Bee and has become a regular at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. His offbeat delivery and fresh take on the world have won him a loyal audience. His 2025 show, Tropical Depression, doesn’t follow a clear narrative thread. But thanks to Dan’s relentless pace and rapid-fire jokes, it never loses steam.
In just an hour, he covers a wild range of topics — drugs, moving to North Korea, Ubers. He doesn’t linger. Each bit lasts a few minutes before he bolts to the next, always full throttle. “No segues,” he says — and he means it. But somehow, it works. His voice is so specific, so confidently odd, that you never feel lost.
The delivery is razor-sharp. No pandering. No fluff. Just precise, punchy writing. Every word is chosen for impact. Even the comebacks to audience noises or off-the-cuff moments land like pre-written gems. You get the sense he’s already five steps ahead. The man’s got language down to an art form.
One of the standout moments came during his crowd work. Whether intentional or not, Dan’s awkward interrogations of audience members’ jobs, and his hilariously terrible responses, became a highlight. It was chaotic, weird, and utterly brilliant.
There’s no lull, no slow build or fade. He grabs the room from the start and never lets go. By the end, the packed Swiss Club crowd was right there with him. Dan Rath isn’t just funny, he’s one of the most original voices in this year’s festival. Catch him while you can.
Dan Rath Tropical Depression is performing until 20 April at The Swiss Club, 89 Flinders Lane as part of the 2025 Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
