Lin-Manuel Miranda’s In The Heights has exploded onto the stage at the Gold Coast’s HOTA, Home of the Arts, for a limited season. Off the back of its successful Melbourne season, this joyous celebration of humanity champions the strength of community and the vibrant tapestry of diversity. Filled with rhythm, passion, heart and hope, In The Heights dances between dreams and reality while reminding us of the power of connection.
Set over a sweltering few days in the Manhattan neighbourhood of Washington Heights, In The Heights pulses with the rhythms of community life. At its heart is Usnavi (Ryan González), who guides us through a world of family traditions, cultural pride, and personal dreams.
Yet beneath the joy and music lies a struggle against gentrification and hardship. The resulting story is a powerful microcosm of urban change in the new millennium.
Miranda’s original concept, music, and lyrics were beautifully shaped by book writer Quiara Alegría Hudes. The show won four Tony Awards in 2008, including Best Musical. It was also a Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist that same year.
While the plot itself is fairly straightforward with some developments clearly signposted, the heart of In The Heights lies in its characters. They are crafted with such warmth and affection that audiences can’t help being swept up with their stories.
Director Luke Joslin works his magic by drawing out every ounce of heart and soul from the characters. Under his direction, the stage feels alive with energy and authenticity, and the entire company embodies a vibrant, close-knit community.
Ryan González anchors the company as Usnavi, winning us over with humour and vulnerability in his pursuit of the sassy Vanessa. Opposite him, Olivia Vásquez commands the stage as Vanessa, with powerhouse vocals and confident dance moves.
As Nina Rosario, Mariah Gonzalez moved me to tears not once, but twice. First with the aching vulnerability of Breathe, and later with the heartfelt poignancy of Everything I Know. Her voice carries every shade of emotion, a rare and powerful gift.
As Nina’s love interest Benny, Ngali Shaw lights up the stage with effortless charm and charisma. His soulful vocals and fluid movement mark him as a standout talent. He is undoubtedly one to watch on the musical theatre stage.
A notable standout in the supporting cast is Alexander Palacio as Nina’s father, Kevin. His heartfelt solo Useless moved me to tears, again. His portrayal of a devoted father willing to sacrifice everything for his child resonates across cultures.
Vanessa Menjivar brings warmth and wit to salon owner Daniela, making her instantly relatable and an absolute delight to watch. Her quick-fire observations land with sharp humour, and she shines at the centre of one of the production’s showstoppers, Carnaval del Barrio. In this number, the ensemble bursts into exhilarating dance, putting Amy Campbell’s electrifying choreography front and centre.
Working alongside musical supervisor Victoria Falconer, music director Zara Stanton conducts a sizzling eight-piece band that pours vibrant energy into Miranda’s infectious Latin American score. A fun moment sees Racheal Byrnes emerge from the pit to deliver a smoking-hot trumpet solo.
Sound designer David Tonion keeps Miranda’s rapid-fire lyrics crisp against the vibrant band. Mason Browne’s set of shopfronts and brownstones, framed by the Washington Bridge, helps set the scene from the outset.
Jasmine Rizk’s lighting, with festive strings above colourful bunting, deepens the carnival mood. Keerthi Subramanyam’s costumes capture the summer heat while defining each character across generations.
In The Heights bursts with song, dance, and heartfelt storytelling, and will leave audiences uplifted and inspired. For those lucky enough to catch this limited season, expect to be swept into a world where dreams are shared, voices are raised, and community means everything.
