Review: In The Heights Pulses With Joy Rhythm And Heart

In The Heights Melbourne 2025

In The Heights, presented by Marriner Group and Joshua Robson Productions, is a celebration of community, culture, and colour. It is a high-energy peek into the kaleidoscopic patchwork of Washington Heights, a neighbourhood in New York City plagued by its state of limbo yet uplifted by its stubborn flicker of hope, even when the electricity goes out.

The story weaves together two main plots: one about Usnavi chasing his dreams and his love for Vanessa, and Nina returning home to face the crushing realities of a dream deferred. Beneath the joyful choreography and sun-drenched music lies a deeper commentary on the struggles, resilience, and hopes of minority communities.

The music and lyrics from Lin-Manuel Miranda are a heady melting pot of salsa and his signature rap-style that takes the thematic Latino American blend to the next level. The occasional Spanish phrase sprinkling across the script, unapologetically untranslated, might leave English speakers out of the loop, but that’s part of the point. This is a story that is proud of its voice.

The highlight of In The Heights is by far the choreography by Amy Campbell. This cast is best when it comes together as an ensemble. Numbers like The Club and Carnaval Del Barrio are a riot for the senses. The twists, the flips, the sexy energy… incredible!

Ryan Gonzalez playing lead Usnavi De La Vega is a magnetic star

Ryan González, playing lead character Usnavi De La Vega, is a magnetic star. Reprising the role from their run of the show in 2018, González is a natural. Their crisp enunciation and rhythm makes for easy listening to the powerful bars set by Miranda. Their breath control is not to be understated, especially when coupled with some killer physical comedy and timing.

Alongside González is Olivia Vásquez as the dreamer, Vanessa. She plays out the internal struggle of Vanessa’s desires to leave the barrio while staying connected to her community well and brings a belting sass to the role.

I was heavily invested in Nina Rosario and Benny’s love story. Playing the pair, Mariah Gonzalez and Ngali Shaw bring young naïveté, warmth, and impeccable chemistry that steals the show.

Following Mariah’s success in Rent, this young star is one to watch with her beautiful and controlled voice. Her ballad, Everything I Know, had me reflecting on how “home” is not a fixed place but something that shifts as we move, grow, and redefine ourselves.

I also really enjoyed Kevin and Camila Rosario’s natural banter with each other. Playing the couple, Alexander Palacio and Angela Rosero’s scenes provide a grounded counterpoint, their marital banter feeling as lived-in as it is affectionate.

Piraguero (Piragua Guy), played by Richard Valdez, is a clear fan favourite. His breezy charm and lilting vocals earn applause before he even begins – a testament to pure stage magic.

Steve Costi as Sonny, the loveable sidekick, is a joy on stage. His comedic timing is perfect.

The set, designed by Mason Browne, appears larger-than-life, extending out into the crowd and draping across the balcony to immerse the audience in the bustling streets of the barrio.

The costumes from Keerthi Subramanyam bring Washington Heights to life and amplify each character’s personality. I have to admit, I was both stressed and impressed by the flawless footwork the female cast pulled off in their strappy stilettos. Flawlessly pulled off, despite my held breath.

In The Heights is for the dreamers, the misfits, and la familia. It is a wonderful patchwork of stories that will spark a fire in each of us to find our home and keep chasing our dreams, even when the world tries to push us aside.

In The Heights runs at Melbourne’s Comedy Theatre to 6 September before touring to Gold Coast’s HOTA from 12 – 24 September 2025.
