Homegrown comedy duo Mel O’Brien and Sam Andrew’s latest offering, No Hat, No Play! The Cabaret is an explosive cabaret of fun and nostalgia that sees them dive into life as a typical Australian primary school kid.
There are lots of niche Aussie jokes that are easy to laugh along with, especially as a girl on the cusp of Millennial / Gen-Z who misses the days when the epitome of friendship was sharing a TotalGirl subscription. I wondered if the show would be as funny without an Australian background, but I went with my friend from Canada, who laughed just as much as I did. (Although I’m not sure she caught the impeccable Kath and Kim references.)
Musically, the cabaret is a delight. The lyrics are just as funny and witty, with a catchy beat that gets the audience quickly humming and singing along. Beneath the clever wordplay, Mel and Sam show off their exquisite singing talents as their voices fill the room to a full house.
Mel and Sam have been working together since finding each other through the University of Melbourne Music Theatre Association. Their chemistry on stage is electrifying, and they seem to be one symbiotic, chaotic being moving across the stage together. There is a moment where Sam prompts an improvisation, and they create an easy playfulness bouncing off each other.
The costumes add to the overall charm of No Hat, No Play! Every detail is thoughtfully curated, from the star hair clips to the Best & Less gym shorts. I felt this added to the fun, carefree spirit of the cabaret and immediately brought each audience member back to their primary school days.
The set is simple but effective, allowing the performers to remain the focal point. The sound engineering was a bit inconsistent in volume, at times too soft to hear some of the school announcements in the beginning.
This is the first show I’ve seen from Mel and Sam, originally written during Covid in 2020. I am looking forward to seeing more of their newer work in future.
No Hat, No Play! The Cabaret is a dazzling, multifaceted show that’s perfect for any nostalgic Australian looking to be entertained, surprised, and delighted. Whether you’re a fan of musical theatre, comedy, or simply enjoy a night of unpretentious fun, this show is not to be missed. Mel and Sam are clearly at the top of their game, and their performance leaves you wanting more.
