Effortlessly funny and quietly masterful, award-winning comedian, presenter, and writer Melanie Bracewell’s latest offering at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival is a reminder of just how satisfying great storytelling comedy can be. Melanie sparkles and shines with the kind of radiance only a comedian who knows exactly who they are and what they stand for could.
Melanie’s signature style is storytelling. From the moment she steps on stage, there’s an ease about her. It feels a little like you’ve just met a friend for coffee and she’s about to tell you a series of deliciously salacious and giggly stories.
The beauty of Dilly Dallying lies in how natural it all feels. Nothing is rushed, nothing is forced. It meanders in the best possible way, lulling you into a relaxed, happy rhythm before cleverly pulling threads together in a way that feels surprising yet inevitable.
This is where Melanie really shines. The show is packed with small, seemingly throwaway anecdotes that slowly reveal themselves to be part of a much larger tapestry. By the time she neatly ties everything together, there’s an undeniable sense of satisfaction in the room.
Compared to previous years, this show feels undeniably personal as we delve into Melanie’s past relationships and her recent engagement (congratulations!). Regardless, you are bound to find something to relate to. Whether that is having a quietly passive fight with your neighbours or flicking through TikTok with your nose.
Stand-up comedy can be a bit daunting, often being the only one on the stage with no set to hide behind. I love that Melanie doesn’t shy away at all, dressed in a gorgeous sparkly number paired with (definitely buckled, NOT laced) silver shoes. She quite literally dazzles under the lights, perfectly complementing the disco ball hanging over the crowd.
The venue, Max Watt’s, was completely packed and for good reason. Melanie has built a loyal following, and it shows. The crowd was with her from the outset, happily along for the ride as she dips in and out of stories, observations, and perfectly timed punchlines.
A special mention has to go to Melanie’s use of props, which are incorporated with a sense of joy that never tips into gimmickry. I won’t give it away, but I was absolutely delighted with the reveal.
Each addition feels purposeful instead of distracting. As a little forewarning to any introverts out there, Melanie does some light crowd work, but I promise it isn’t daunting, so don’t be afraid to come to the front row!
Above all, Dilly Dallying is really funny. Melanie’s wit is sharp, her timing impeccable, and her delivery disarmingly relaxed. There’s no need for big theatrics or forced energy; she trusts the material, and rightly so.
To me, Melanie is a phenomenal writer who also happens to be gifted with comedy genius.
This is what makes her shows such a consistent joy to watch. If you’re after a comedy show that leaves you feeling lighter and entertained, come and dilly dally with Melanie Bracewell!
