Inspired by Lionsgate’s film sensation, the Now You See Me franchise is a box office hit that has grossed nearly $670 million worldwide. A fourth film is already in development.
The movies follow the Horsemen, a misfit team of magicians, through incredible twists and trickery to serve their vigilante justice. The third and most recent film, Now You See Me: Now You Don’t, was released in November and introduced a new generation of Horsemen to the franchise.
Following on their coattails, Now You See Me Live features four internationally renowned illusionists as they perform magic that crosses the line between reality and the unbelievable.
The stars Gabriella Lester (Canada), Adam Trent (USA), Andrew Basso (Italy), and Pablo Canovas (Spain) shine a new light on the beloved movies while also adding their own personal touch.
They encourage the audience to pay close attention and make every effort to minimise doubt in their performances. Quoting the famous words of Horseman J. Daniel Atlas, played by Jesse Eisenberg: “the closer you think you are, the less you’ll actually see.”
Creative and Staging Director Ash Jacks expertly incorporates this sentiment into the show through props and designs that enable spectators to see another side of the tricks and have a deeper appreciation of the quartet’s talent.
Throughout the show, a cameraman takes the audience up close and broadcasts every detail of the illusions onto a big screen. Yet solving the mystery of their magic is still close to impossible.
Now You See Me Live is unique for its immersive experience. Everyone gets the chance to be a part of the magic. Especially during the card trick where audience members rip their four playing cards in half, shuffle them and throw seemingly random pieces in the air, only to be left with something that defies logic.
Adam Trent is a natural entertainer with his elaborate tricks, funny jokes and his ability to mess around with the audience. His infectious charm is the greatest magic of all. Trent’s sleight of hand expertise is best seen when he magically transports an audience member’s phone inside something that seems impossible.
As the youngest member of Now You See Me Live’s Four Horsemen, Gabriella Lester proves that a daredevil attitude and devious skills don’t just come with age. In one of her acts, she is locked in a safe onstage only to appear a few seconds later on the third-floor balcony waving and calling down to the audience. It’s a joy to see her perform with an explosive passion and fiery sentimentality.
Pablo Canovas plays a clever and artful trickster. When showcasing his teleportation skills, he urges the spectators to look closely to catch how he accomplishes it. He adds more light to the stage and wears a bright coverall to make it easier to see. But he still manages to fool everyone.
The show features more than just spellbinding illusions. It also has Andrew Basso’s daring and dangerous stunts. He shocks and amazes when he escapes from chains with a scorpion trapped inside his mouth, while having an audience member slap him across the face.
Yet, he outdoes himself by recreating Houdini’s famous Water Torture Cell. A feat that is truly extraordinary to watch live. Seeing the pain, fear and relief flash across his face leaves no room to doubt his extraordinary skills. Basso’s performance will have audiences gripping at the edge of their seats and waiting with bated breath.
Now You See Me Live goes beyond its namesake movies to become an experience that everyone, not just fans, will enjoy. It is an out-of-this-world, reality-bending show that the whole family will love.
