Reuben Kaye’s website boldly declares, “Reuben Kaye already knows he’s an icon. It’s time for you to find out too.” Hard to Swallow proves he isn’t exaggerating — he’s simply ahead of the curve.
From the moment he storms onto the stage like a glitter-drenched gale-force hurricane, it’s clear he’s stepping fully into the icon status he’s long prophesied for himself. With his trademark wit, immaculate makeup and couture, filthy humour, powerhouse vocals, and razor-sharp crowd work, Kaye commands the room with the assurance of someone who knows exactly what he is: a star in full flight.
The two-hundred-seat theatre at Liberty is packed to the rafters, and the audience devours every camp jab, every political barb, every outrageous aside. “Melania’s nothing more than a Temu Eva Braun.”
But it’s his take on the current shite state of affairs on the global stage that really elevates this show to something meteoric. He pulls no punches and takes no prisoners in his critiques of Trump, fascism, toxic masculinity, and international politics.
He even manages to wring laughs from the funeral of Charlie Kirk. (“Fascism is nationalism combined with authoritarianism and pageantry — let’s take a look at the funeral of Charlie Kirk, for instance. Did anyone catch Erica Kirk’s performance? Oscar‑award worthy!”)
Trained in Music Theatre at the Victorian College of the Arts, Kaye is a consummate professional. His voice and performance are electric, and his songwriting is formidable. His mind and wit are sharp as a tack, and with a gag every three seconds (pun fully intended), he keeps the audience on their toes.
Even his occasional self‑deprecating asides land beautifully: “Sorry! Missed my meds today — thought the show might be more fun without them!”
What really impresses is that he sings his satirically loaded songs with perfect diction, ensuring the audience catches every word — important, because the lyrics are delicious, outrageous, and biting. You don’t want to miss a syllable.
He also shares some wonderful stories that point to a new age of acceptance and diversity, including a fascinating anecdote about a Palestinian doctor he encountered in a Jewish hospital in Berlin. (It’s worth noting that Kaye is Jewish and outspokenly pro-Palestinian.)
Kaye radiates charisma and wields his opinions with unapologetic force. His confidence is magnetic, and his sheer delight in performance makes him irresistible to watch. He’s a razor-sharp entertainer with a treasure trove of wit, allowing him to deliver the most audacious lines with style and precision.
His comedy can be startling, but he has the elegance and control to make even the boldest moments land. It’s this fearlessness — and the craft to back it up — that continues to propel him forward, earning him growing acclaim.
His previous show, The Party’s Over, recently picked up four nominations at Melbourne’s Green Room Awards, and Hard to Swallow suggests he’s only just hitting his stride.
