Review: The Rite of Spring by Queensland Symphony Orchestra with C!RCA is Magic

Queensland Symphony Orchestra CIRCA QSO Rite of Spring - Sam Muller

As I entered the QPAC Concert Hall for the Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s (QSO) performance of The Rite of Spring with C!RCA, it was clear the evening was going to be a magical experience. The 2025 Season Opening Gala concert features an exquisite program including Debussy’s Prelude to ‘The Afternoon of a Faun‘ and Respighi’s Concerto Gregoriano.

As I settled into my seat, I could sense the anticipation in the air, and rightfully so. Members of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, who had performed on Sunday in the Concert Hall on the final leg of their Australian debut tour, were spending some extra time in Brisbane and were in attendance.

The concert opened with the enchanting melodies of Debussy’s Prelude. I found myself transported into a serene world of lush landscapes and tranquil sounds. The orchestra, under QSO’s Chief Conductor Umberto Clerici’s masterful direction, capture the essence of the piece with remarkable finesse.

The captivating performance by violin soloist Kristian Winther in Respighi’s Concerto Gregoriano left an indelible impression. As his fingers glided across the strings, I was struck by his virtuosity and dedication to his craft. Amazingly Kristian Winther performed the complex work entirely from memory. The audience shared my admiration; it was a privilege to witness such a display of talent and artistry.

As the first notes of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring filled the hall, I could feel the energy shift as the orchestra skilfully navigated the piece’s intricate layers. The raw power and beauty of the music resonated within me, a testament to the immense skill and passion of each musician.

What elevated this performance to new heights was the groundbreaking collaboration with the talented artists of C!RCA. As the orchestra envelop us in the intense beauty of The Rite of Spring, the acrobatic performers add a visual element that takes one’s breath away.

Though I initially wondered how these art forms would intertwine, it soon became evident that the powerful movements of the acrobats are a harmonious match for the music. The collaboration creates a truly unique sensory experience.

Throughout the concert, the passion and commitment of Maestro Clerici, Kristian Winther, and each musician is palpable, and truly inspiring to witness. As I observed the orchestra members’ unwavering focus, I was struck by their devotion to their art, honed through years of practice and dedication.

As the final notes resonated through the hall, and a well earned standing ovation was received, I left with a renewed appreciation for the transformative power of music and art. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra’s unforgettable performance, paired with the captivating collaboration with C!RCA, created an experience that will resonate with me long after the echoes of the concert have faded.

Queensland Symphony Orchestra has an exciting Season 2025 planned, with offerings for everyone, from the traditional classical music lover to the new generation of fans. Brochures are available in the foyer, and highlights include Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 in Concert and Skyfall in Concert, both in April.
