Avenue Q: The Comedy Smash Hits Melbourne in February

Avenue Q by AG Theatre

Melbourne based theatre company AG THEATRE PRODUCTIONS is kicking off its 2025 season with the laugh-out-loud Broadway smash hit AVENUE Q. The highly entertaining and irreverent R rated musical has firmly cemented itself in theatre history, throwing out political correctness as it hilariously tackles all kinds of taboo issues including racism, unemployment, homosexuality, love, and porn with its raucous Sesame Street-like puppets.

This ‘anti-musical’ redefines musical theatre, as it tells the timeless story of a recent college grad named Princeton, who moves into a shabby New York apartment all the way out on Avenue Q. He soon discovers that, although the residents seem nice, it’s clear that this is not your ordinary neighbourhood. Together, Princeton and his new-found friends struggle to find jobs, dates and their ever-elusive purpose in life.

Avenue Q is set to take over Melbourne’s historic, National Theatre in St Kilda from 22 February

Filled with gut-busting humour and a delightfully catchy score, not to mention R-rated puppets, Avenue Q is a truly unique show that will leave audiences rolling down the aisles with laughter. This revolutionary show garnered the coveted ‘triple crown’ at the Tony Awards in 2004 winning Best Musical, Best Score and Best Book of a Musical, toppling the mega-production Wicked.

“Since its Broadway premiere two decades ago, Avenue Q has solidified its place as a timeless classic. For first-time audiences, they are in for one hell of a treat! For those revisiting the show, this production is packed with enough fresh elements and unexpected delights that not only keep it alive and vibrant but will deliver the same exhilarating thrill as the very first time they saw it,” says Director Pip Mushin.

From the producers behind the critically acclaimed musical theatre hits The Boy From Oz, Freaky Friday and The Sound of Music, Avenue Q is the place you live when you can’t afford to live anywhere else!

Avenue Q is a must see for people who love all things inappropriate and a good laugh! The show has long been the darling of both Broadway and off-Broadway theatres, consistently selling out to delighted audiences for an incredible 16 years since its 2003 debut.

It’s the Tony Award winning musical proving that everyone is a little bit racist..sometimes..

Avenue Q runs from 22 February until 8 March 2025 at the National Theatre, 20 Carlisle Street, St Kilda.
