What does it mean to be ‘honoured’ by a state that wants you out of sight? The Brazilian film The Blue Trail asks a question that feels alarmingly urgent in our era of performative politics and social neglect.
Tereza is 77 years old and lives in a small industrial town on the Amazon. She arrives home from work one day to discover that a wreath has been placed over her door. Someone explains that she’s being honoured as a living national heritage. “Since when is growing old an honour?” she replies wryly.
Soon after, she’s tracked down by the ‘wrinkle wagon,’ which rounds up older people and takes them to ‘The Colonies,’ from which it’s rumoured people never return.
Tereza has other plans. She decides she wants to fly in a plane for the first time before they ship her off. But when she tries to buy a plane ticket, she’s told she’s now under the custody of her daughter, who must approve the purchase.
As the state’s grip tightens, she embarks on a bid for freedom and autonomy that takes her on a grand adventure down the Amazon River.
The Blue Trail combines social relevance with emotional and cinematic power. It’s beautifully shot by Guillermo Garza, whose every river bend, jungle shadow, and rippling current becomes a vivid witness to Tereza’s journey. His cinematography turns the Amazon into a lush, living character that stays under your skin.
As Tereza travels the Amazon, she is also travelling through her inner terrain, exploring what it means to be alive.
Director Gabriel Mascaro is known for combining social realism with lush visual imagery. The dystopian premise behind The Blue Trail could be brutal and heavy-handed, but its treatment of state fascism is subtle and poetic.
The government oppression is cloaked in artificial concern and propaganda. People appear to behave with respect and kindness toward the elderly, but it’s clear they are being stripped of their dignity and autonomy.
Tereza cannot even buy food without presenting her papers and being refused service. While people are sympathetic to her plight, they also fear getting into trouble with the authorities if they help her.
As Tereza, Denise Weinberg gives a rich, emotionally layered performance. It’s a delight to witness her journey from a disempowered and undervalued older woman to a fully realised character living her best life, pursuing her wildest dreams, and demonstrating an ever-increasing sense of power, identity, and agency. Weinberg exhibits groundedness, depth, and authenticity in the role.
As we navigate societies in which we valorise youth and beauty over age and wisdom, shunt our older people off to nursing homes, and struggle within capitalist systems that value profit over people, The Blue Trail is a quiet and poetic piece of resistance. It urges us to question bureaucratic overreach and reset our values away from corporate greed toward humanity and dignity.
This is a quietly beautiful film that deserves the accolades it received at this year’s Berlin Film Festival, including the Grand Jury Silver Bear Award. A quietly devastating allegory, this is a film that lingers in both mind and heart.
