The Prom arrives this month at the newly revitalised Teatro at the Italian Forum, bringing its heart and high-energy celebration of pride to Sydney audiences. The Tony-nominated Broadway smash-hit has become a global favourite for its infectious score and powerful message of acceptance. Anticipation is building ahead of the Australian premiere.
The Scoop sat down with Paige Fallu for some rapid-fire questions. Paige steps into the role of Alyssa Greene, and reveals what makes the musical more than just a high school story, what the rehearsal room has been like so far, and the sweet spot she was standing in when she got the life-changing call. For readers who’ve never seen The Prom, how would you describe it in one sentence?
A heart-warming, fun-filled, inspiring and eye-opening story.
Without spoilers, what makes The Prom more than just a ‘high school musical’?
The raw truth behind it!
What makes Alyssa Greene such an interesting character to play?
She goes on such a journey that is integral in a lot of young queer people’s lives. The audience might find her story frustrating, but it’s very real and relatable for a lot of young people.
Do you remember the moment you found out you’d be playing Alyssa?
Yes! I was in line for ice cream when I got the call! I got a double scoop to celebrate!
What’s the vibe been like in the rehearsal room so far?
It’s been so open and warm. Discussing the truth, the why, and the how between each of these characters. I am inspired by every single cast and crew member every single day!
You previously played Tracy Turnblad in Hairspray. How different is Alyssa from Tracy?
Tracy Turnblad is always unapologetically herself. The interesting part about Alyssa Greene is the journey it takes for her to live as her proud, unapologetic self. She goes through ups and downs, but ultimately realises she must live as her whole true self.
Is there anything you learned from playing Tracy that you’ve brought to this role?
Alyssa totally needs some of the confidence that Tracy has! The difference is her journey and how she steps into that confidence by the end of the show.
What is your pre-show ritual?
I need lemon and ginger tea! I started it recently, and now I can’t stop.
You trained in Musical Theatre at WAAPA. What is your best advice for auditionees?
Be so unapologetically you! Drama school is about finding a safe place to develop your craft over an extended period of time. Don’t force yourself to be “perfect.” That’s the point of the training. Force yourself to BE yourself.
How do you stay sane and busy in between shows?
I love to stay physically active purely for my brain function! And I go pet all the cats that live on my street. (Laughs)
What would your younger self say if she saw you now?
“Wow, we did it.”

If audiences walk away feeling one thing, what do you hope it is?
Open! I hope they walk away with open hearts and minds
What’s a dream role you’d love to play one day?
I’d love to play Muriel in Muriel’s Wedding. So fun!
What’a you advice to anyone wanting to pursue professional musical theatre?
Love it with your entire heart and soul and being. You get out what you put in so GO FOR IT.
