This winter, Queensland Ballet brings a beloved classic to life with Peter and the Wolf, a symphonic fairytale designed to captivate children and families. From 27 June to 5 July, join young Peter on his musical adventure in a vivid and heartwarming ballet, set in the welcoming surrounds of the Talbot Theatre at the Thomas Dixon Centre.
As part of Queensland Ballet’s popular My First Ballet series, Peter and the Wolf is the perfect introduction to the worlds of ballet and orchestral music. In a special treat for audiences, the performance features live musicians on stage. Each character will be brought to life by a different orchestral instrument. Composer Sergei Prokofiev wrote the score in 1936 with this in mind, to introduce children to the orchestra.
Queensland Ballet is thrilled to partner with Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Showcasing the extraordinary talents of emerging young musicians, they will perform the iconic score live on stage at every performance. This unique musical experience allows children to see, hear and feel how music and movement come together to tell a story.
Queensland Ballet Artistic Director Ivan Gil-Ortega reflected on the legacy this production represents:
“Greg Horsman’s playful choreography offers a fresh and engaging take on this beloved story, honouring the original 1960s version choreographed by our founder, Charles Lisner OBE, while delighting today’s audiences with colour, charm, and creativity.”
Choreographer Greg Horsman adds that the production also offers a powerful learning opportunity for young audiences.
“Our young audiences will be able to connect the sound of each instrument to the characters they see on stage. The clarinet becomes the cat. The oboe becomes the duck. And Peter is brought to life through the string section. It’s a joyful, educational experience that inspires a lifelong love of both music and dance.”
Narrated by Hugh Parker and featuring vibrant sets and costumes by Josh McIntosh and Noelene Hill, along with atmospheric lighting by Ben Hughes, Peter and the Wolf is a visually rich and playful retelling that promises to charm all ages.
The production is performed in Queensland Ballet’s stunning Talbot Theatre. A purpose-built, family-friendly space, it has excellent sightlines in an intimate atmosphere, allowing every child to feel close to the magic. Before or after the show, families can enjoy a meal or treat at Tom’s Kitchen or Layla Restaurant, with special children’s menus available.
To enhance the experience, Queensland Ballet is also offering interactive workshops for children aged 2 to 5 years and 6 to 12 years. Participants can explore the story, characters, and ballet moves from the production. Bookings are essential and can be made at the website.
Exclusive Peter and the Wolf merchandise is also available to purchase over the counter, with a themed charm bracelet, water bottle and children’s t-shirt, available separately, or as a bundle.
Peter and the Wolf runs from 27 June – 5 July as part of Queensland Ballet’s My First Ballet series, at Talbot Theatre, Thomas Dixon Centre. 406 Montague Road West End Qld 4101.
