After the successful launch of Queensland Theatre’s DOOR 3 program in 2024 – which provided opportunities for 38 Queensland artists, achieved two Matilda Awards and presented work to over 2,000 attendees – the successful creative incubator returns in 2025.
The 2025 productions include PRAMKICKER by MO Theatre (16 May – 7 June), So Many Splintered Parts by All Forms Considered and Assembly of Elephants (8 – 23 August), and SUPERHEROES by Bodysnatchers (7 – 22 November).
Sadie Hasler’s PRAMKICKER is a “vulnerable, potty-mouthed love letter to modern women,” that dissects the rage and relationships of sisters Jude and Susie. It is co-directed by Amy Ingram and Nerida Matthaei.
Jude is angry. Susie’s mainlining custard again. When Jude is arrested for kicking off in a café full of passive-aggressive “yummy mummies,” she’s sent to anger management. Susie, determined to make sure Jude’s next jumpsuit isn’t one with a serial number, tags along. But Susie’s not just there for moral support—she’s nursing secrets of her own.
In this no-holds-barred, G&T-fuelled D&M, the sisters dive into the mess of adulting, expectations of motherhood, and a woman’s worth. It’s a middle finger to the labels we’re forced to wear, and a chance to figure out who the hell we are now we’re all grown up. So Many Splintered Parts presents seven Brisbane writers with two actors and eight minutes each to share disparate and deeply personal vignettes on the world. Tyrone Noonan will be performing live songs and sounds inspired by each work.
Seven Brisbane writers, one bold provocation: It’s happening all over the damn place, all over the world… the fracturing of everything… nations, ethnicities, races, genders, the environment – into so many splintered parts.
These seven writers have each delivered a poignant and powerful play for two actors, split across times and perspectives.
Mark Rogers’ Griffin Award and Patrick White Award-winning SUPERHEROES interweaves the narratives of Emily and Jana, two women on opposite sides of the world who rise to overcome their challenges and master their destinies.
Two young women, worlds apart, both at breaking point. It’s November, 2017. On the south coast of NSW, Emily has forgotten her nephews’ birthday party and needs her ex-boyfriend to answer her texts. In Mostar, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Jana’s trip to the grocery store puts her smack bang in the middle of the European refugee crisis.
At two points on the globe, these stories play out in parallel. And with no caped dudes in spandex coming to the rescue, it’s up to Emily and Jana to save themselves. But what does it mean to take responsibility for our actions? And what does being a hero really look like?
Featuring twinned monologues threaded through with scenes of devastating humanity, this masterful play comes to Magandjin for the first time, staged by the team behind Naked & Screaming (Best Production, 2022 Matilda Awards).
Queensland Theatre Artistic Director Daniel Evans says DOOR 3 provides financial support, space, infrastructure and mentoring to help local theatremakers debut new work and share stories that are burning to be told.
“Independent theatre is alive and kicking in this city. Our state’s indie theatre makers are the best in the country. Rock-n-roll, resourceful, keen to push the limits of what theatre is (and could be), and ready to tell stories that are bold, blistering and beyond belief.
“Giving these stellar artists the space and support to bring their burning story to the stage in their voice, on their terms, is Queensland Theatre’s way of acknowledging how important and vital our indie arts scene is to our broader arts ecology. In its inaugural year, DOOR 3 gripped, provoked and delighted audiences. The 2024 Matilda Awards judging panel agreed, naming The Reaction Theory’s Scenes from a Yellow Peril Best Independent Production and Best Ensemble across the state’s performing arts industry.
“Being part of the DOOR 3 Program has given us the platform to be bold and courageous while also being supported as emerging artists coming into the fold,” said Chelsea August and Egan Sun-Bin, Co-Directors of Scenes from a Yellow Peril.
The Nest Ensemble’s Wanderings was shortlisted for two Matilda Awards including Best Performance in a Leading Role – Independent Production for Margi Brown Ash, and for The Lord Mayor’s Award for Best New Australian Work.
