The Scoop Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular

Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular is the best night out in Sydney right now.

This is a five-star show for me because it does everything I want art to do. It woke up my inner child, and for an hour and a half, every person inside that tent was overcome with joy. And that feels pretty rare at the moment.

From the minute you step inside the enormous tent erected at Sydney’s Entertainment Quarter, you feel transported into the world of The Greatest Showman. There are immersive photo opportunities, ushers fully in character, and popcorn stands. It’s got all the trimmings of an old-school circus spectacle.

Making its Australian debut thanks to Showpath Entertainment, under the creative direction of Simon Hammerstein, the production reimagines the music and world of the film The Greatest Showman. The story follows Max (Ruby Clark), who arrives to watch her boyfriend perform his first trapeze solo before becoming swept up in a travelling circus made up of four circus families.

The plot is secondary to the sensory experience of the show, but it still deserves its flowers. Reimagining a world as beloved as The Greatest Showman is no easy feat, and the team does a beautiful job of capturing its essence.

Every song you want from the original is accounted for, led by a group of four UNBELIEVABLE singers.

This is ensemble work at its finest and probably highest stakes. Every single performer is firing on all cylinders at all times. The acrobats get in on the dance numbers. The dancers help move set pieces. Every person onstage is completely invested in creating the magic of the world.

Visually, the production is epic. Every detail of the costumes by Susan Kulkarni is so carefully considered, allowing performers to execute demanding physical feats and look unbelievable while doing it.

And this tech team. Damn. I don’t know how they do it. Queuing this show would give me a hernia. It’s genuinely staggering how many elements have to go right to make this show happen. Every single moment is a miracle.

Then there are the performers themselves, who are total pros.

A standout for me is Alexey Glavatskyi, the tightrope walker. His act is just impossible. He defies gravity and brings so much charisma to the performance.

Another memorable act is the hair suspension performed by Laura Wells. It is ethereal; my scalp burned just watching. That is just to name a few, but know that every single person involved is extraordinary.

People are yearning for escape. For something magical. And Come Alive! The Greatest Showman Circus Spectacular somehow captures that lightning-in-a-bottle feeling. The show is dynamic, emotional and nostalgic.

Seeing it on opening night was a particularly special little treat. My plus one and I had the night of our lives. Bring your kids, bring your grandma, bring your housemates and go see this show.
