Picture this: a tragic lifelong Potterhead, giddy with excitement at the entrance to Melbourne’s Fever Exhibition and Experience Centre, squealing at the sight of the iconic Platform 9 ¾ sign towering over the gate. That was exactly how I kicked off my Harry Potter: The Exhibition – After Hours experience, on a balmy Monday night this week.
Touted as an interactive, immersive spectacle, this global touring exhibition is an absolute treasure trove. The brilliant brainchild of Imagine Exhibitions in partnership with Warner Bros Discovery, it boasts an abundance of authentic props, costumes and memorabilia spanning the franchise’s many incarnations.
With After Hours curated for adults and missing its usual crowds, the evening was a subdued, intimate affair. The charming wonders of the Potterverse came alive with such precision and warmth. I took my time revelling in all its breathtaking sights and sounds that felt both surreal and familiar.
Every part of its design encourages play, exploration and marvel. I explored Hagrid’s Hut and sat on his giant chair, I attended a Herbology class and pulled out a screaming Mandrake from its pot. I cast a few spells, looked into a crystal ball, and brewed a potion. And even came face-to-face with a dragon!
From getting sorted to one of the iconic Hogwarts Houses (Slytherin for me), traversing along the wizarding school’s corridors with its moving paintings, playing a game of Quidditch, to exploring the Forbidden Forest, it was impossible not to be overcome with childlike amazement.
Faithful recreations of notable sets, like Harry’s cupboard under the stairs, the Chamber of Secrets vault complete with intertwining serpents, the green fireplace that leads to the Ministry of Magic, and Professor Dumbledore’s Pensieve, makes the experience tangibly authentic.
Seeing the Deathly Hallows in real life was a definite highlight. The way in which the Invisibility Cloak was supposedly set up ‘on display’ right next to the Elder Wand and Resurrection Stone – albeit totally invisible – made me chuckle.
Behind-the-scenes details peppered throughout the exhibits about real costumes, set pieces and other memorabilia from the franchise’s core movies and its spin-offs (the Harry Potter and the Cursed Child stage play and the Fantastic Beasts series) were the icing on the cake.
The quieter, relaxed nature of the After Hours 18+ format, complete with Potter-themed cocktails, allowed me to fully savour each moment. This was more than just an exhibition. For a fan like me, it was an opportunity to relive Harry Potter’s magical adventures through adult eyes, reuniting with the beloved characters and stories I grew up wishing I was a part of. Which felt bittersweet, given its creator’s increasingly complicated, controversial views on socio-political issues in the public sphere.
Still, as I walked out of the venue, I couldn’t shake off that euphoric feeling of having witnessed pure magic. Harry Potter: The Exhibition was heartfelt, nostalgic, and deeply moving. It was a vivid reminder of why Harry Potter and his expansive universe continue to resonate across generations. An utterly bewitching experience.
