Having recently swapped England for Sydney myself, I found an unexpected taste of home in Dollhouse Collective’s production of Simon Longman’s Milked. On now at the Old Fitz Theatre, rural Herefordshire is brought to life in this powerful and darkly funny two-hander.
Directed by Simon Porro, this dark comedy arrives in Sydney more than a decade after its 2015 UK premiere and two years after its Melbourne season. Time has done little to diminish its impact.
Paul (Aaron Wilson) and Snowy (James Provis) are in their early twenties and already confronting the uncomfortable possibility that life has not unfolded as expected.
Paul spends his days applying for jobs that never materialise, armed with a history degree that doesn’t impress anyone in recruitment. Snowy is less certain about what he wants, but equally aware that remaining in the same place forever may not be enough.
Their friendship provides the emotional core of the play. Snowy invites Paul to slow down, go for walks and appreciate the rhythms of country life. Paul, meanwhile, is desperate to escape. The tension between staying and leaving simmers beneath almost every interaction.
Then there is Sandy.
An injured cow discovered in a nearby field sets the pair on a misguided mission of mercy that spirals into increasingly chaotic territory. Chainsaws, train tracks and terrible decision-making all feature prominently. Longman mines considerable humour from the absurdity of the situation, but never loses sight of the deeper sadness underpinning the story.
Porro handles these tonal shifts with confidence. The comedy lands cleanly, while the quieter moments are given room to breathe. Milked asks its audience to move between laughter and discomfort, and this production trusts its script and performers enough to allow those transitions to happen naturally.
Wilson captures Paul’s mounting frustration with conviction, bringing a restless energy to the role that reflects a young man trapped by circumstance and increasingly exhausted by trying to change it. In the intimate setting of the Old Fitz, there are moments when a lighter touch might have allowed Paul’s quieter vulnerabilities to resonate even more strongly.
Opposite him, Provis delivers a more understated portrayal and flourishes with the comedic elements of his role. Snowy’s warmth and humour are evident, but so too are his fears about being abandoned and left behind. Together, they create a believable friendship built on affection, dependence and shared uncertainty.
Longman’s writing remains the production’s greatest strength. The dialogue is sharp and often very funny, yet beneath the jokes sits a thoughtful examination of class, geography and opportunity. Milked recognises that adulthood rarely arrives with clarity or confidence. Instead, it emerges through mistakes, compromises and difficult choices.
While the story occasionally ventures into unexpected territory, its emotional core never wavers. Through the situation involving Sandy, Paul and Snowy are compelled to confront fears and uncertainties they would otherwise rather ignore.
Running on dark humour and genuine compassion, Milked is an affecting exploration of friendship in a world that offers few guarantees. Funny, poignant and sharply observed, it confirms that Longman’s play has lost none of its relevance. This Sydney production ensures its message continues to resonate.
