Ross Noble: Cranium of Curiosities is currently on at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the 2025 Brisbane International Comedy Festival. From the very first moment, it is clear that Noble has little interest in following a script. At least 80% of the show feels improvised. Material springs from audience comments, misheard words, or random associations that only his singular brain can make sense of. There is no safe zone, no untouched topic. Whether skewering Flight Centre with deadpan disdain or inexplicably spiralling into a bit about wildly inappropriate snow globes, Noble’s comedic instincts remain razor sharp, even when logic leaves the room.
One of the show’s standout charms is how it felt like a shared fever dream. Noble doesn’t just tell jokes; he builds entire worlds of nonsense on the fly. A simple comment from a first-time punter in the front row became a recurring thread, woven back into the show an hour later with madcap precision. At one point, a mention of Werther’s Original – yes, that dusty caramel treat of yesteryear – sparked a nostalgic tangent so unexpected it felt like being mentally time-warped by a wizard in cargo pants.
Noble himself summed up the experience best when he declared that his shows aren’t like watching comedy on TV. “It’s more like watching ten computer screens at the same time. All of which are being operated by an off-the-chops monkey,” he said. And there’s no better description. The performance is an onslaught of surreal ideas and unrelenting tangents, delivered at dizzying speed and with the kind of energy that makes you wonder if he even knows where it is going.
For those who crave polished, rehearsed stand-up, this may not be your scene. But for anyone who loves watching a comedy genius at play – letting the crowd steer while he accelerates the madness – Cranium of Curiosities is unmissable.
