The amazing 2nd year company of the Queensland Academy of Excellence in Musical Theatre (QAEMT) are breathing new life into their production, Songs for a New World. This musical showcase brims with raw talent and relentless energy.
Songs for a New World is no ordinary musical. It’s a series of songs that are all connected by the theme of change. There are no ongoing storylines or recurring characters. But in each piece, the subjects face a distinctive life-altering decision. This incredible song cycle touches on the timeless feelings of yearning, regret and happiness.
Written and composed by the legend behind Parade and The Bridges of Madison County, Jason Robert Brown, Songs for a New World was his first major production. Opening as an off-Broadway musical in 1995, it has seen many revivals since, as Brown’s pop-rock-influenced music worms its way into the hearts of listeners.
Director Elise Greig expertly channels the cast’s enthusiasm and talent into an enthralling production. She skilfully avoids any complications with the somewhat convoluted nature of the musical by focusing on the intricate moments in each scene.
This musically dense production would have surely posed a challenge to any musical director. Brett Sturdy, however, pulls it off spectacularly. Under his care, Jason Robert Brown’s masterpieces glimmer with a strong sentiment that resonates with the audience.
Dan Venz’ choreography is a joy to watch. Each performance is a well-thought-out wonder that shows a clear consideration of the lyrics, tempo and direction. The production opens with the dynamic and hopeful song, The New World, which this talented cast performs with an exciting liveliness.
They flitter across the stage with their props and unique characteristics while shining with their stunning voices and harmonising. It’s reminiscent of the bustling streets of a 90s-era New York City, where the musical was originally performed.
The New World leads seamlessly into On the Deck of a Spanish Sailing Ship where Ned Kelly sails smoothly with his strong and soulful singing. Kelly captains the rocky sailboat that is ingeniously brought to life by the cast’s collective coordination and perfect positioning.
Addisyn Herndon gives a mesmerising portrayal of a frustrated and attention-seeking wife in Just One Step. She flawlessly balances the distressing sentiment of the song with humour that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.
Herndon’s impressive vocal skills will amaze as she holds a note in a powerful display of control and tone. Alongside singing trio Alessia Charman, Priya Gill and Hannah Mohr, Just One Step soars with sass and spirit.
Steam Train sees the stage transform into a basketball court within seconds as star ‘player’ AJ Betts and ‘coach’ Harry Ince sing their way to success. Betts weaves through the many dancers onstage while bouncing and passing a basketball in this complex and coordinated performance. A wonderful combination of cheer and charm, it’s hard not to dance along.
Start celebrating the festive season with Zoe Allsopp Lander’s flirty and feisty take on Mrs Claus in Surabaya Santa. In this fun-filled performance, she’s joined by a chorus of helpful elves (Harry Ince, Sam Thomas and Jackson Hughesman) as they bring the heat to the North Pole. Allsopp Lander’s captivating confidence and alluring voice lend an enchanting style to the femme fatale role.
Songs for a New World is an epic adventure that travels across time, place and many individual lives. It’s a musical that will have audiences bracing for the unexpected and connecting with unfamiliar perspectives.
As the 2nd year company are about to head into their final year at QAEMT, Songs for a New World is an exciting opportunity to watch Australia’s future musical theatre stars take centre stage in an intimate and personal setting.
