The Scoop Lost World Cinema South Bank Brisbane BIFF

The Brisbane International Film Festival (BIFF), in partnership with South Bank Corporation invite you to step away from your festive streaming watch list and immerse yourself in a once-in-the-holiday experience at South Bank’s Rainforest Green, via its unique outdoor cinema program Lost Worlds Cinema: The Most Wonderful Time.

This specially curated Christmas film program is designed for families and viewers ready to come along for something truly unique this festive season.

Running from 15 to 23 December, this cinematic sleigh-ride delivers a hearty fill of festive cheer and something a little extra. It’s a perfect blend of heartfelt nostalgia and seasonal fun.

This year’s line-up plays the season in a higher key, sending Christmas spinning between childhood memories and festive comedy to chaos, with 6pm and 8pm sessions for family-friendly and adult-only options.

Muppet Christmas Carol is screening at Lost Worlds Cinema this festive season

White Christmas drifts in on a butter-soft haze while Black Christmas slips down the chimney with a scream, and Muppets Christmas Carol finds its glow just steps away from the bittersweet cynicism of The Apartment.

Mischief reigns after dark as Gremlins stirs up suburban carnage and The Family Stone dissects social gatherings with acerbic wit. Edward Scissorhands and Tangerine remind us that even in the loneliest season, connection has a funny way of cutting through.

And with Batman Returns and Bell, Book and Candle prowling through December with glamour, danger and a little holiday hexing, this is Christmas cinema with bite. It’s a festive feast for viewers wanting more than the same-old candy-cane version of events.

It wouldnt be Christmas with a screening of Home Alone Showing at Lost Worlds Cinema this festive season

Sophie Mathisen, Executive Director, BIFF, said the season is tailor-made for viewers craving a fresh serve on holiday tradition.

“Christmas films often arrive pre-packaged in the same sentimental glow. However, this program celebrates the traditional tinsel as something far more interesting shines through.

These films are warm, wild, unruly and unexpectedly moving. They are the perfect treat for anyone who feels Christmas should come with a bit more adventure, excitement and diversity.”

Ms Mathisen added that local programmers had curated the season’s screening sessions.

“This cinema program has not been built by another bot. Really talented locals have chosen films that will appeal to our local audience, while also showcasing two Australian Premieres.”

Lost Worlds Cinema is presented by Brisbane International Film Festival in partnership with South Bank Corporation. It runs from 15 – 23 December 2025 at South Bank.
