Into the Woods is a show that holds a concrete position in musical theatre history. The tale first debuted in 1986 and is a perfect example of the classic Stephen Sondheim theatrical style.
Since then, many have retold this twisted fairy tale. Company of Dramatic Arts (CODA) has produced a delightful rendition of this legendary show, continuing to explore the age-old idea that a happy ending does not always look the way we think it will.
Into the Woods intertwines the tales of several Brothers Grimm fairy tale characters, centred around the wish of a baker and his wife to have a child. As the ensemble of characters enter the woods, they achieve everything they ever wished for. But this does not lead to the exact happy ending they had imagined.
For those who may be less familiar with the plot, a warning that the show does contain some mature and sensitive themes. An announcement is made at the beginning of the show advising that patrons are welcome to leave the theatre at any time if needed. Despite the fairy tale through-line, there are concepts in this show that may not be appropriate for young children.
Director Daniel Walsh has crafted a wonderful production that truly allows the talent, ingenuity and camaraderie of the entire cast and crew to shine. The theatre design feels very immersive, which is a perfect reflection of the relevance of the themes explored beyond the fairy tale realm.
Musical director Dom Serov has done a great job of directing the cast through the musical complexity of this production. It is also delightful to watch the band come to life during the show.
This is a very ensemble-driven musical, and it is clear to see how the cast have come together to support each other through this immense production. While I unfortunately can’t shout out here the performance of every cast member, the entire cast’s characterisation and vocal harmonies are masterful.
Chris Rutter is marvellous as the Baker, perfectly reflecting the evolution of the character’s mindset as he is transformed by the journey through the woods. Tessa Marsden performs as the Baker’s Wife. Her vocal talent and characterisation truly shine throughout the story.
The Witch is masterfully portrayed by the powerhouse performer Claire Garment. It is incredible to see her command the stage. Her softer side is very much revealed in her interactions with Rapunzel, played by Bailee Guyer, whose ethereal vocals absolutely soar through the theatre.
Jason Kennedy-Davidson is so much fun to watch, as he injects trouble into the story as both the Mysterious Man and the Narrator. Tahlia Allen is a beautiful Cinderella, capturing the character’s strength and kindness in her performance.
Alexander Miech wonderfully portrays the clumsy teenage antics of Jack. It is also so delightful to watch his interactions with Milky White, puppeteered by Olive Caraturo, and his put-upon mother, played by Olivia Dustmann.
I do have to give an honourable mention to Olive’s performance. Watching her bring the emotions and reactions of Milky-White to life was an absolute highlight of the show for me.
Piper Ellis is charmingly chaotic as Little Red, and it is a delight to see her grow throughout the story.
Maximillian Kendrick performs double duty as the sly Wolf and Cinderella’s Prince, and he embodies both characters with aplomb. Agony, which he performs alongside Rapunzel’s equally suave Prince, played by Hudson Perry, is a joy to watch. A shout-out to Hudson’s performance; his interactions with the audience and reactions on stage have perfect comedic timing.
Opening night experienced a few issues associated with awkward scene transitions and slightly off lighting cues. However, I do want to praise the professionalism of the entire cast, crew, musicians and technical team. It was wonderful to see how supportive they were of each other on stage and how they worked together to adapt to the challenges.
Into the Woods is a massive, delightful show. This latest production is an absolute testament to the dedication and talent of the performers, creative and technical team of CODA. At a time when supporting local musical theatre is more important than ever, this is absolutely a show to see!
