A razor-sharp Queensland table drama where friendship, ideology and conviction collide, and certainty comes at a cost. Lucky is a darkly funny, bruising new Australian play by Queensland playwright Liam Lowth.

This November, Brisbane independent theatre company Yeah Nah Theatre brings Lucky by Liam Lowth to the intimate Diane Cilento Studio as part of Queensland Theatre’s DOOR 3 program. Running from 13 – 28 November 2026, Lucky begins with a familiar dinner between friends. What unfolds is anything but.

On a dreary Brisbane evening, university mates Pitt and Brett gather around the dinner table with their partners, Sabina and Katelynn. As the wine flows and conversation turns, long-held beliefs surface, old loyalties are tested, and beneath it all lingers the shadow of a moment none of them can quite leave behind.

As civility cracks, blood is shed and the storm rolls in, one question remains: How far would you go to defend what you believe?

Playwright Liam Lowth said:

“I’ve always loved theatre that shakes you awake. Theatre that asks questions rather than provides answers. With Lucky, I wanted to play with the familiar ‘dinner table blow-up’ genre and give it some Australian electricity.

There’s something exciting about using a form audiences recognise to lull them into a false sense of security before taking them somewhere unexpected.

Bring someone you agree with, someone you disagree with, or anyone in between, and get ready for a contemporary pot-boiler about the uncomfortable possibility that we might be wrong about the things we’ve always believed were right.”

For Lowth, Lucky marks an exciting new chapter in his career as a Queensland playwright, building on the momentum of his emerging body of work. His previous play, Failure to Launch, was staged at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre, and he was recently shortlisted for the 2026 Queensland Premier’s Drama Award.

For Yeah Nah Theatre, Lucky is a major milestone. This will be the company’s biggest production yet and a bold step forward since launching in 2024. The company champions ambitious, locally driven independent theatre in Magandjin, creating opportunities for Queensland artists and bringing fresh Australian stories to the stage.

With Lucky, Yeah Nah Theatre is building on its foundations and pushing the possibilities of independent theatre in Queensland.

The show brings together a talented team of Queensland actors, directors, designers, producers and creatives to stage Lowth’s work at one of the state’s most significant theatre institutions.

Yeah Nah Theatre’s Campbell Lindsay said:

“
DOOR 3 has given us the opportunity to bring Lucky to Queensland Theatre alongside an incredible team of local creatives. It’s a huge step for Yeah Nah, but just as importantly, it’s about creating opportunities for Queensland artists to make ambitious work together.”

The production features a cast of Queensland performers including Meg Bowden, Jack Mahoney, Siena D’Arienzo and David Chizedek Vaka. This powerhouse ensemble is ready to bring this Queensland premiere to life, throwing everything they’ve got into the story.

Director Mikayla Hosking said:

“What do a Liberal, a Greenie, a fence-sitter, and somebody about to go into labour have in common? This play. Political, poignant, precarious and pretty bloody funny, Lucky is a pressure cooker of a play that will not only keep you on the edge of your chair but make you feel like you are in the hot seat yourself.

As a director, I love this sort of work – the familiar becoming uncomfortable, the nastiness starting to appear, and knowing there is no easy way out for these four people.”

Yeah Nah Theatre’s Meg Bowden added:

“Lucky feels like exactly the kind of story we want to be telling at Yeah Nah Theatre. It’s funny, uncomfortable, chaotic and very human. We love theatre that gets under your skin, gets people talking and gives you something to chew on long after you’ve left the theatre.”

Lucky is written by Liam Lowth and is presented by Yeah Nah Theatre alongside Queensland Theatre’s DOOR 3 Program. It runs 13 – 28 November 2026 at the Diane Cilento Studio, Queensland Theatre.  78 Montague Road South Brisbane Qld 4101.
