Les Femmes, a powerhouse trio of female vocalists, made their Brisbane debut at The West End Electric in Brisbane yesterday. Reimagining songs originally performed and made famous by men, the group puts a fun feminist spin on rock, pop and R&B classics, transforming familiar tracks into something entirely their own.
The West End Electric was the perfect setting for the trio’s debut performance: an intimate yet dramatic venue that allowed their powerful voices and infectious energy to take centre stage.
The show kicked off with a striking rendition of Frank Sinatra’s That’s Life. Emma Mylott, Jacinta Gulisano and Kirrah Amosa burst onto the stage in shirts and ties, glittery suit trousers, and (very) high heels. It was a playfully feminine nod to a show that celebrates songs made famous by men, placing them in the hands of women.
From the opening number, the trio’s individual strengths were unmistakable. Emma brings an undeniable intensity and edge to the stage, Jacinta delivers extraordinary pop melodies, whilst Kirrah’s vocals add a rich, sultry warmth to the performance.
Whilst each artist is an accomplished performer in her own right, the beauty of Les Femmes lies in how well they come together. The trio deliver flawless harmonies and captivating vocal arrangements in a performance that is completely enthralling.
Les Femmes dedicates different sections of the show to the important men in our lives: partners, friends, fathers, exes and everything in between. I particularly loved the distinction between each section, with the trio effortlessly shifting tone and energy from one to the next.
One moment they were performing a sexy and sultry romance section, and the next they were having fun with songs belonging to the ‘players’, the ‘charmers’ and the ‘good guys’. Each section brought its own personality to the show, exploring the ways that many different men can feature in our lives, for better or for worse.
The section that particularly captivated me opened with the familiar Rocket Man and was dedicated to perhaps the most significant men in many of our lives: our fathers. My dad has brought me up to love and appreciate music, introducing me to many of the artists that Les Femmes celebrated during their performance, such as Elton John, George Michael and Queen, alongside many others.
For me, the section was a nostalgic reminder of the role my dad has played in shaping my love of music. As I listened to the songs that my dad and I both love, I found myself wishing he could have been there beside me to share the moment.
Emma, Jacinta and Kirrah aren’t just singers; they are performers. From the impressive choreography and hilarious crowd work to the chemistry between them, the trio made it clear that they were genuinely having fun.
The magnetic energy of Les Femmes was infectious as the audience danced and sang along to the show, giving me goosebumps throughout. And somehow, they managed to do all of this in heels!
Unsurprisingly, it was mainly women in the audience, but there were also plenty of men. With shows scheduled for Brisbane and Sydney, all in a Sunday afternoon time slot, Les Femmes is perfect for those looking for a good day out, or for anyone who loves great music and a bit of a dance.
Les Femmes is playing Sunday afternoons on the 18 October & 29 November at The Grand Electric Sydney and 27 September & 8 November at The West End Electric Brisbane.
